Cheat-tastic, Mate:
Choose five lives, your difficulty level, and then press Buttons A, B, C, and Start (all together). Now rotate the D-padclockwise. When you're on the title screen, press Start and you won't lose a single heart throughout the game.

For infinite lives, choose five lives again, and press Buttons A, B, C and Start. Now press Left and Right until the titlescreen appears. Now, press Start. You should now find that when you run out of lives, nine more will appear.
